Frequently asked questions

Getting started
Making an enquiry
What information should I provide when making an enquiry?
A short summary of what happened, when it happened, who was involved and what you would like to achieve. Mention any deadlines, notices or court papers you have received. You do not need to send documents at this stage.
How do I know which legal service I may need?
You do not need to know. Describe the situation in your own words and we will identify which area it relates to. If you are unsure, choose “Something else / not sure” on the enquiry form.
What happens after I submit the contact form?
We review the information you have provided and contact you using your preferred method. We may ask some follow-up questions before explaining your possible next steps.
Are initial consultations available?
Yes. Your initial consultation is free and there is no obligation to take things further afterwards.
Does making an enquiry mean I have instructed you?
No. An enquiry does not create a solicitor–client relationship. That only happens once the scope of the work and the terms of engagement have been agreed in writing.
Fees and funding
Costs and how matters are funded
How are legal fees explained?
Before any chargeable work begins, we explain the likely costs, what they cover and how they may be funded. This is confirmed in writing so you can make an informed decision.
What is a conditional fee agreement?
A conditional fee agreement, often called “no win, no fee”, is an arrangement where the lawyer’s fees depend on the outcome of the case. If the claim succeeds, a success fee may be payable. In personal injury cases, the success fee a client pays is capped by law at 25% of certain types of damages. There may also be other costs, such as insurance premiums, depending on the arrangement.
Are all personal injury claims eligible for a no-win-no-fee arrangement?
No. Whether a conditional fee agreement is available depends on the individual claim, including its prospects of success and value. Some claims may be better funded in other ways, such as legal expenses insurance you already have. We will explain the options that may apply to you.
Do I have legal expenses insurance?
You may. Legal expenses cover is sometimes included in home, car or business insurance policies, or bank accounts. It is worth checking your policies before you speak to us.
Claims and timescales
Time limits and documents
How long can a legal matter take?
It depends on the type of matter, how complex it is and how the other side responds. Some disputes settle within weeks; others, especially serious injury and court cases, can take considerably longer. We will give you a realistic indication once we understand the facts.
Are there time limits?
Yes. Most personal injury claims must be started within three years, and many contract and negligence claims within six years, although there are many exceptions. Court deadlines can be much shorter. Please seek advice early.
What documents should I keep after an accident?
Keep photographs, the other party’s details, witness contact details, any accident report or reference number, medical appointment details, receipts for expenses and evidence of lost earnings. A short diary of your symptoms can also help.
I have received court papers. What should I do?
Act promptly. There are strict deadlines for responding to a court claim, and judgment may be entered against you if you do not respond. Contact us as soon as possible and tell us when the papers arrived.
